The Royal Commission into the Victorian bushfires to begin in Melbourne today will be streamed live over the Internet.
The commission follows preliminary hearings last month into the blazes that killed 173 Victorians and destroyed thousands of homes.
Country Fire Authority witnesses, including chief fire officer Russell Rees, will use its Google Maps application to show the progress of the fires. Rees will also answer background questions about when alerts were issued and when the fires broke.
The proceedings will be broadcast on a large screen in the Victorian State Library while regional communities will be supplied with computers to tune-in.
The CFA Google Maps received “many thousands” of Australian and overseas visitors during the fires, while the authority and concerned users created Twitter feeds to provide continuous updates from the ground.
The live video stream is available here.
