Android-powered Nexus S now on Vodafone (with Gingerbread)

Plans available over 12 or 24 months

Vodafone has announced the immediate availability of the Samsung Nexus S handset, which is the first in Australia to run Android 2.3 “Gingerbread”.

The Nexus S is available to existing Vodafone customers from today and to new customers from March 16.

Vodafone announced back in February that it will be the first carrier to offer the Nexus S – often dubbed as an “iPhone killer” – but did not say when.

The handset is available on a range of plans from $29 per month to the $100 Infinite Combo plan. Handset payment rates vary from $35 per month to zero depending on the plan, which can be over 12 or 24 months (see image).

The Nexus S has a 4-inch display with WVGA 480x800 resolution (stain and fingerprint resistant), a 1GHz Samsung processor with built-in graphics processor, a 5 megapixel camera and 16GB of internal memory.

The Nexus S will be available in black or white.

Vodafone Hutchison Australia marketing director, John Casey, as the first operator to launch the Nexus S, Vodafone can offer customers “the fastest version of Android yet”.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread was released late last year and features support for larger screen sizes than smartphones, a SIP stack for VoIP, improved copy and paste of text, and native support for Wi-Fi hotspots.

Near Field Communications (NFC) support also arrives with Gingerbread and a new download manager handles long-running downloads better in the event of a drop out.

Samsung Electronics Australia vice president for telecommunications Tyler McGee said the Nexus S is the first Samsung-Google co-developed device to enter the Australian market.
