Symantec Australia has confirmed to Computerworld Australia that the security software vendor made an unnamed number of engineering staff within its research and development team in North Sydney redundant this week.
A spokesperson said that sales staff at its Kent Street branch would not be affected and the North Sydney office would remain open. No other Australian redundancies were expected, and New Zealand operations would remain unchanged.
"We are currently working with affected staff to find alternative options within the organisation for them," she said.
The roles are to be outsourced to Symantec's other research and development centres around the world which include the US and India but the spokesperson would not confirm a report in The Australian that most of the roles would be going to low-cost centres such as India.
The redundancies are the result of a global consolidation decision by the vendor.
"The company is consolidating a small number of positions in certain development and product engineering roles to improve productivity and drive operational efficiencies," said the spokesperson.
"Symantec remains committed to its customers and partners in Australia and these changes do not affect customer facing teams in this region. We have a strong team in place that remains focused on providing quality service and support to our Australian customers and partners."
