MiTek increases productivity, deploys UC across Australian business

UC adoption reduces call costs, enables mobile workforce

Manufacturing and software technology company MiTek has deployed a unified communications (UC) system across its Australian business.

Speaking to Computerworld Australia about the rollout, MiTek’s information systems administrator, Daniel Heathershaw, said the company needed to replace its phone system due to a lack of functionality.

“We needed a new system and it wasn’t that we were looking for a UC solution, but the pure IP telephony was the way we saw it going,” he said.

“If we wanted to create any functionality to the system, we weren’t able to do that.”

Heathershaw cited a need for increased productivity across MiTek’s three Australian offices as another reason for making the make the move to unified communications. He selected ShoreTel for the upgrade.

“Once we decided on ShoreTel, we probably had six weeks of planning to get the infrastructure up to scratch and we had to update our core networks and the wireless area network (WAN),” he said.

Following the rollout of the all-in-one IP phone system with integrated UC and contact centre integration, Heathershaw said the company is now able to focus on core business operations while reducing administration costs.

“Adoption has been really good and we’re really happy with the phone system,” he said.

“The main impact has been reduced call costs and we can use features that help on the road staff and executives.”

Next up on Heathershaw’s IT agenda is the rollout of SharePoint and a new CRM system.

“Finding time to fit everything in with the larger projects, such as SharePoint, is complicated,” he said.

“We do OK and manage our time pretty well thanks to the systems in place.”

FoodWorks and the Melbourne Football Club have also moved to ShoreTel's UC system, with both organisations doing so after their original phone systems failed.
