Blog Macpost has published pictures it has received from a Chinese part supplier that appear to be of casing for the iPhone 5.

According to the blog the EVT2 label on the front of the case stands for 'Engineering Verification Testing', indicating it's a prototype. "The codename ‘N94′ marked on [the] cover clearly indicates that it is a fifth-generation iPhone part," the blog reported.

the Wall Street Journal reported that the successor to the iPhone 4 would be released in October.

Rumours about the specifications of the new iPhone include that it will have a larger, 'edge-to-edge' display and a beefed-up camera.

Other rumours about the next Apple smartphone include:

• It may have a Near Field Communication (NFC) chip. NFC chips can be used for mobile payments; in Australia, the Commonwealth Bank this year revealed it is working on support for NFC transactions. Support for NFC was added in version 2.3 of Google's Android platform. Handset support for NFC is still limited, however.

• It will include an A5 CPU. The A5 is the 1GHz, dual-core processor used in the iPad 2. Apple boasted that the A5 boosted the iPad 2's graphics capabilities by nine times compared to the first-generation iPad, which employed an A4 chip.

• The possible ditching of the 'home' button. The home button has featured on every Apple handset since the first-generation iPhone.
