Australian Cloud services revenue set for dramatic growth: IDC

Analyst firm predicts 34 per cent compound annual growth rate up to 2015

The Cloud services space in Australia will have healthy revenues well into the future according to IDC, which has predicted the sector to be worth $2030 million by 2015.

IDC's Australian Cloud Services 2011-2015 Forecast and Analysis report states that this growth will be due to Cloud computing replacing servers, mobile applications and the development of Big Data tools.

The Cloud services sector was worth $470.3 million as of 2010. The forecast growth will come from different Cloud categories including applications, application development and deployment (AD&D), systems infrastructure software, storage and servers.

A September IDC survey of enterprises in Australia found that 20.6 per cent of the respondents are using Cloud computing, while 32.4 per cent are planning to deploy Cloud services in the next six to 12 months. A further 41.2 per cent of companies are planning to implement Cloud services by 2013.

IDC Australia senior market analyst, Raj Mudaliar, said in a statement that 29 per cent of the respondents were using or planning to use a virtual private Cloud (vPC).

“Virtual private Clouds are services provided through a secured network by a Cloud provider but not necessarily to a single enterprise,” he said. “It was seen as a way of mitigating some of the risk which continues to be of concern to early public Cloud users."

He added that because of the forecast revenue growth, IDC predicts an opportunity for IT companies to provide services around Cloud assessment, planning, workload migration, security best practices and governance.
