NBN Co signs up defect and maintenance provider

Geomatic Technologies to deliver first phase of the DMS solution by April 2012

NBN Co has signed a multimillion dollar deal with Victorian mobile and spatial technology provider, Geomatic Technologies (GT), to deliver a defect and maintenance management solution (DMS) for the National Broadband Network (NBN).

Under the three-year contract, GT will be responsible for delivering its field mobile computing DMS solution to support NBN Co’s construction auditing, maintenance, and operations processes.

NBN Co auditors will be able to trace, log, and manage defects in the NBN’s construction using the solution, as well as track the performance of construction contractors.

NBN Co field staff and contractors will be able to transfer information between each other using a ruggedised mobile device equipped with a camera, GPS, and wireless connectivity for real-time data upload. It will also enable staff to work in ‘disconnected mode’ in remote locations without wireless connectivity.

In addition, the solution features map-based visualisation in the office and field to provide an overview of activities across all construction sites.

The DMS solution — to be integrated with NBN Co’s project management, document management, and spatial systems — is expected to be rolled out by April 2012, with the second and final phase scheduled for completion in August 2012.
