More Tasmanian areas switched onto the NBN

Sorrell, Deloraine and Kingston Beach have joined Triabunna as suburbs now switched onto the NBN

More sites in Tasmania have been switched onto the National Broadband Network (NBN).

Customers can now connect to the NBN in the Tasmanian areas of Sorrell, Deloraine and Kingston Beach, with Tasmania's first paying NBN customer recently announced in Triabunna.

NBN Co said it expects to cover 12,8000 Tasmanian households in the coming weeks, including 4900 premises in George Town and St Helens.

Sorrell, Deloraine, Kingston Beach and Triabunna are expected to cover 3900 households.

A total of 4000 premises in Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point took part in early testing of the NBN.

“The job ahead for NBN Co in Tasmania is to roll out the network across the remainder of the state. It’s a construction project that will see the creation of up to 800 new jobs at the peak of the rollout and the establishment of a permanent Tasmanian workforce to maintain the network,” said Greg McCann, chairperson of NBN Tasmania, in a statement.

The first complete rollout of the NBN is scheduled to occur in Tasmania, covering around 200,000 homes and businesses with the fibre network in a $300 million contract with Visionstream Australia.

Around 32,000 Tasmanian homes and businesses will be serviced by the NBN through fixed wireless broadband, which will provide wholesale internet service providers with speeds of up to 12Mbps.

NBN Co recently announced 14 local government areas in south west Victoria will also be switched onto the NBN via a fixed wireless network.
