Geraldton selects IBM to build data centre

Multi-million project will commence in August

Solutions provider Market Creations has signed a multi-million dollar contract with IBM for the supply of a cloud-enabled data centre to the Western Australia city of Geraldton.

According to the vendor, this will help the city with its energy efficiency goal.

IBM will design and construct a scalable modular data centre with a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.3. The facility is designed to scale up to four times its current capacity while the cloud capabilities will offer multi-tenancy. The consulting phase of the project begins in August 2013.

“Geraldton needs to be able to leverage scalable and resilient technology to support our vision of becoming a technologically advanced and carbon-neutral hub,” said City of Greater Geraldton mayor Ian Carpenter in a statement.

“The new data centre will help provide that platform as the first stage of this digital evolution for our city and citizens.”

In March 2012, the city received a grant and advice from IBM to create a roadmap to improve technology as part of IBM’s Smarter Cities Challenge.

Miranda Scarff, manager of corporate citizenship and affairs at IBM Australia, told Computerworld at the time that Geraldton’s grant submission was a standout, with the city highlighting its desire to make the most of technology infrastructure investments in the region and the National Broadband Network (NBN). The city also wanted to improve data sharing between agencies.

The US$50 million Challenge is a three-year program and part of IBM's philanthropic initiatives. It will provide technology and services to 100 municipalities worldwide over the course of the program.
