Woolworths (ASX:WOW) has urged customers not to fill out a fake customer satisfaction survey which asks for bank account details in exchange for a $150 Woolworths voucher.
The survey scam has been circulated via email and Facebook.
A Woolworths spokeswoman said it would never ask customers for their personal or banking details in unsolicited communications.
“All of our official competitions run from our Facebook page at facebook.com/woolworths and are posted on the Promotions & Competitions page of our website,” she said in a statement.
The scam has been reported to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) by Woolworths. ACCC’s SCAMwatch has received 140 complaints about the survey since the start of September.
ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said that if customers are duped, they will find that the vouchers are fakes and Woolworths won’t honour them.
“Scammers impersonate well-known businesses to get their hands on your personal details. Once you have unknowingly sent your details to a scammer, they can steal your money – and possibly even your identity,” she said.
According to Rickard, surveys which offer gift vouchers are a legitimate marketing tool often used by retailers which is why people get caught out.
“If you see one of these surveys, call the business’ official customer service line before starting it,” she said. “Don’t rely on the links or numbers provided on the offer as this can link to a fake website or even a fake call centre.”
If a customer has provided account details to a scammer, they should contact their bank straight away.
Rickard added that the Woolworths survey scam also circulated in 2012.
“Last year, victims of this survey scam reported money stolen from their credit card with losses up to $1000. Others were unwillingly subscribed to premium SMS services, which cost money for every SMS received."
