Microsoft has begun selling its new generation of tablets in Australia The Surface 2 and the Surface 2 Pro. The tablets are available online from Microsoft and in-store at Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi.

Australian pricing for the Surface 2, which runs the cut-down Windows RT operating system, starts at $529 for the 32GB version. The 64GB version costs $639. The Microsoft Surface 2 has a 10.6-inch touchscreen display with a Full HD (1920x1080 pixel) resolution.

Inside, a 1.7GHz quad core NVIDIA Tegra 4 runs the show, with 2GB of RAM. Battery life is rated at up to 10 hours of video playback, according to Microsoft. The Surface 2 has dual cameras: A 3.5-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5Mp rear camera. The tablet has a USB 3.0 port, as well as a card slot and a video out port.

The Surface 2 Pro runs Microsoft's fully featured Windows 8.1 OS. It's available in four models with different storage capacities, with pricing starting at $1019 for the 64GB model and topping out at $2039 for a 512GB model.

Microsoft's high-end tablet runs an Intel CPU based on the Haswell architecture. The Surface 2 Pro has a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5-4200 U processor and 4GB or 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM.

Like the Surface 2, the tablet has front- and rear-facing cameras, but both have a 720p (0.9Mp) resolution. Like its cheaper stablemate, the Surface 2 Pro also has a Full HD 10.6-inch touchscreen, a USB 3.0 port and a MicroSDXC card slot.
