Utility provider EnergyAustralia has warned customers about an email phishing scam that claims to contain a link to their electricity or gas bill.
The email, which is simply addressed to `Dear Valued Customer’, asks the customer to click on a link to view their bill. The link takes people to a website address that is not operated by EnergyAustralia.
According to a spokesperson, the email contains spelling mistakes and does not include a customer’s name or account number.
“EnergyAustralia is warning people who receive the emails to delete it immediately or report the scam activity to our customer service centre on 133 466,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
“Customers can also report the scam to the Australian Competition Consumer Commission [ACCC] Infocentre on 1300 302 502.”
The spokesperson added that law enforcement authorities are investigating.
This is not the first time EnergyAustralia customers have been targeted by such a scam. In September 2013, customers received an email which claimed that their electricity payment was declined by their bank.
The email asked customers to click on a website link, stating that if they did not click the link within 15 days their phone line would be cancelled.
