Hosting provider Rackspace this morning announced it would open up a secondary data centre in Sydney to offer disaster recovery capabilities and geo-redundancy for its clients.

Rackspace's primary Australian data centre is based at Digital Realty in Erskine Park, Sydney.

The new DR facility will be based out of Equinix's data centre in Alexandria, Sydney.

"The reason that we've decided to open a second data centre in Australia is really because we've been getting very strong demand from our existing customers and also from prospects that we've spoken to in the market," said Angus Dorney, director and general manager at Rackspace ANZ.

"These are particularly larger enterprise customers and those from the types of industries and sectors that require geo-redundant data centres within Australia, such as financial services or government," Dorney told Computerworld Australia.

Opening a second data centre in Sydney was cost effective because Rackspace could leverage its investment in its existing infrastructure in the city and also manage the secondary data centre using the existing employees with "a slight increment to the size of that team".

"The second reason that we located the disaster recovery facility in Sydney is to meet the latency and geographic proximity requirements of some of our larger enterprise customers, who require data centres within generally about 40 or 50 kilometres for real-time backups and latency in the backup software they're using," Dorney said.

'Significant expansion'

Rackspace also announced what Dorney described as a "significant expansion" of the company's presence at Digital Realty's Sydney data centre.

"We're moving into a new data hall there, which is really a result of the very strong growth hat the business has been going through in this part of the world," Dorney said.

Rackspace opened its first Australian data centre in 2013 at the Erskine Park facility.

The company expects the new data hall to be opened in September.
