Big data is forecast to drive $34 billion of worldwide IT spending in 2013, according to research firm Gartner, with the figure for 2012 standing at $28 billion.

Both factory revenue and unit shipments grew in the second quarter of 2012, according to research firm IDC, with worldwide factory revenue recording an increase of 6.3 percent year-over-year to just under US$ 2.0 billion, and shipments increasing 6.5 percent to 496,697 units.

The public cloud services market is expected to grow 19.6 percent in 2012 to total $109 billion globally, with Business process services (BPaaS) said to account for about 77 percent of the total market, according to a report by Gartner.
Worldwide spending on security is expected to touch the $60 billion mark in 2012, up 8.4 percent from $55 billion in the previous year, according to research company Gartner -- this figure will approach $86 billion in 2016.

According to a recent survey conducted by disaster recovery and data protection solutions provider Acronis, small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) around the world are planning to adopt server virtualization in 2012 at a faster pace than large enterprises. However, the survey also identified widespread backup and disaster recovery shortcomings for virtual servers amongst SMBs. Meanwhile, previous enthusiasm for cloud infrastructure has, at least so far, failed to turn into reality.
