SONY TO BUNDLE NEW VERITAS BACKUP EXEC QUICKSTART SOFTWARE WITH ITS AIT TAPE DRIVES

SAN JOSE and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 8, 2005 – Sony Electronics and VERITAS Software Corporation today announced that Sony is equipping its customers with the tools they need for effective data backup and recovery by bundling and shipping version 10.0 of VERITAS’ Backup Exec™ QuickStart Edition software with numerous models of Sony’s branded tape drives.

VERITAS is the worldwide leader in backup and archiving storage software with 40.4 percent revenue share in the third quarter of 2004 according to IDC. Beginning today, Sony will include a copy of the newly released VERITAS Backup Exec QuickStart software with numerous models of all generations of Sony branded Advanced Intelligent Tape™ (AIT) drives, as well as with numerous DDS-4 drive models.

“Our new tape backup bundle delivers value to our channel partners and end-users by combining Sony’s powerful and reliable tape drive storage offerings with the latest backup and recovery software from VERITAS, the industry’s leading backup software vendor,” said Alan Sund, general manager for tape storage solutions in Sony Electronics’ Component and Business Solutions Division. “We expect the bundle to be especially appealing to small-to-mid-sized businesses that are looking for a complete, simple, scalable and tested solution to reliably address their growing storage needs.”

Sony and VERITAS worked closely to test and certify the hardware and software to ensure full interoperability. The bundle comes with a variety of pre-defined backup templates that enables users to begin backing up critical data right out of the box.

“VERITAS Backup Exec QuickStart is ideal for quick and easy backup of data on single servers because it is simple to set up and manage and provides core capabilities for first-time server and storage buyers with basic IT needs,” said Jeremy Burton, executive vice president, Data Management Group, VERITAS Software. “Bundling Backup Exec QuickStart with Sony storage devices and other key partners’ products makes it even easier for customers to gain access to leading backup and recovery solutions from VERITAS. We are excited to have Sony on board as one of our first OEM partners for this new product.”

About Sony’s AIT Technology AIT technology, a result of 50 years of Sony innovation and technological expertise in magnetic recording techniques and mechanisms, is characterized by 8mm recording media in a compact 3.5-inch drive form factor, a helical-scan recording technique, unique Remote Memory-In-Cassette (R-MIC) capabilities and the use of Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) media. AIT, with the industry’s highest areal density, offers greater capacity per sq/inch than any other data tape technology in the world.

Sony is the only tape storage company to ship a total of four generations of AIT drives and media within the same format simultaneously, giving end-users a wide-ranging choice in capacity levels, convenient interfaces (USB, IEEE 1394, ATAPI and SCSI) and configurations from stand-alone drives to automated solutions to address their various storage needs.
