UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND SELECTS DELL™ TECHNOLOGY FOR STATE-OF-THE-ART GATEWAY TO ELECTRONIC LEARNING
- University of Auckland launches largest NZ Dell desktop rollout to date -
Sydney, September 1, 2003 – Dell announced today that the University of Auckland Library selected five hundred Dell OptiPlex™ SX260s to provide the information gateway for over 26,000 students. Housed in the world’s largest purpose built University Information Commons Building being launched today in a ceremony attended by the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Helen Clark, the desktop solution is worth 1.4 million dollars and is the largest Dell desktop rollout of its kind in New Zealand.
“We needed a secure, robust and reliable desktop solution that was as functional as it was aesthetically advanced,” says Lynn Talaic, Library Business Manager, University of Auckland. “We chose the Dell OptiPlex SX260 for exactly these reasons coupled with Dell’s superior value and warranty package.”
A steering committee from the University awarded the contract to Dell over a number of competing vendors based on its flexibility, bundled 3 year next business day warranty , superior local support and its customisation of the technology to meet the University’s exact needs.
Security customisation is paramount in a Commons university environment, according to Talaic, and Dell’s ability to customise specific features such as the cable covers and bolt-down security of the units far exceeded the nearest alternatives.
OptiPlex desktops are designed for networked business environments which require longer product lifecycles, standards-based technology and a full suite of user-friendly management tools, making them easy to deploy and maintain.
“The OptiPlex SX260 is the smallest and most flexible desktop computer in Dell history and was designed as a result of direct customer feedback,” said Frank Luburic, Dell OptiPlex Product Manager, New Zealand and Australia. "We talk to customers around the world every day and continually incorporate their views and comments into product solutions that are innovative and customer-relevant. The SX260 is ideally suited for space-conscious customers like the University of Auckland Library, but doesn't sacrifice power as a result of its small size."
The deployment was straightforward and could be managed by a team of just six University employees. “The rollout was surprisingly easy,” says Talaic. “Since then, from 7am to midnight through term-time, every desktop is being used by students. It has far exceeded our expectations – even in the first month!”
The Information Commons Building has been operational since late April and already, feedback has been extremely positive from academics and students alike.
